If I were . . .

Not for nothing is Mary Fox Linton regarded as the Grande Dame of Interior Design. In the mid 1950s, she opened her first design studio under her own name, working on large private houses both in the UK and abroad. In the early 1970s, she collaborated with David Hicks on many such projects, and by the mid-seventies, she had founded Fox Linton Associates. FLA’s clients included prestigious UK and international hotels, spas, commercial spaces and international private residential properties. Mary has received many awards including the Lifetime Achievement Award from Architectural Design, The Royal Oak Foundations’ Timeless Design Award, the BIID Merit Award and the Homes and Garden Lifetime Achievement award, She continues to work as a part-time consultant and non-executive Director of Fox Linton Interiors Ltd.

If I were a FLOWER, I would love to be a Peony because it has a wonderful fragrance and is one of the most beautiful flowers. It is a native of China and was known as the King of Flowers. The name in English comes from Paeon (the Greek physician of the Gods) who used the root to heal Pluto. Peonies might not flower for very long each year, but when they do, they really make an effort.

If I were a BOOK, I would choose T S Eliot’s Collected Poems, 1909-1962. A particular favourite of mine is the beautifully written, The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock.

If I were a FILM, I would like to be The Hundred-Foot Journey directed by Lasse Hallström. It is a brilliant film and beautifully acted, a gentle send-up of the sacrosanct French cuisine and the importance of a Michelin star seen through the eyes of the equally talented, but slightly bemused Indian chefs.

If I were a CITY, I would choose to be Beirut. I fell in love with both the city and its people many years’ ago. They have a remarkable resilience and love of life that I hope will see them through their current hardships.

If I were an ICE-CREAM FLAVOUR, I would be Coffee – not very popular in this country, but heaven when made in Italy and enjoyed on a warm Italian evening under the stars.

If I were a COCKTAIL, it would be Whisky Sour. Nothing to do with my personality, it just reminds me of my late teens and my early twenties

If I were a MUSICAL INSTRUMENT, I would be a flute because of its purity of sound. I love the many concertos composed for piano and flute, all very different and equally pleasurable to listen to.

If I were a SUPERHERO, I would be Wonder Woman. No further explanation needed . . .
