Susie McLaren, Creative Head of Residential Interiors at SHH
If I were . . .

Founded in 1991, SHH is an award-winning architectural and interior design practice, based in London but with projects across the globe. Susie is a vastly experienced interior designer, heading up the well-established, residential interior design team alongside Rupert Martineau. Her team specialises in elite homes at some of London’s most prestigious addresses, including the recent restoration of Athlone House in Highgate.

If I were a FLOWER, I would be a honeysuckle. Sweetly fragrant, very happy in England, but with origins from afar.

If I were a SONG, I would choose Nina Simone’s ‘Feeling Good’. I appreciate how lucky I am for so many reasons: my health, family, friends, colleagues, the beauty that surrounds me and my ongoing passion for my work.

If I were a FABRIC, it would be an Etro print: classic yet current, beautifully balanced with rich colours, and the finest Italian design and quality.

If I were a FILM, I would be ‘Phantom Thread’ with Daniel Day-Lewis, a study of extraordinary commitment to a craft and set in the very glamorous 1950’s world of London haute couture.

If I were a BOAT, it would be a pedalo, because it’s fun – especially with a friend in a warm, calm sea off a white, sandy beach with the sun on your face.

If I were a DANCE I would be the Flamenco, full of passion, drama, confidence and a flirtatious freedom. I also love the influences from different cultures that enrich the art.

If I were a SHAKESPEARE CHARACTER, I would choose to be Cordelia from King Lear, because of her great integrity and compassion.

If I were a COLOUR, I would be aqua blue – it is glorious and boundless, like the sea with hidden depths, enhanced by the sunlight and sky. My happy place is to be by an aqua blue sea, particularly when walking my dogs.
