Thomas Joynes . . . Studio Visit

What does your studio look like today?

It is an extremely modest sized workshop and it currently feels smaller than ever, being full of several works – some completed and some still in progress.

What are you most excited by right now?

My brain is at breaking point with new designs and concepts I would love to start working on and experimenting with, so I am looking forward to having time to focus on new work once I complete the current series of commissions.

What is your must-have when working?

Radio 2 until PopMaster, then either my own music, or quiet . . . depending on the work at hand and level of concentration required.

What do you do to make yourself feel better when things don’t go according to plan?

Either work through the problem to find a resolution, or visit the nearest beer garden.

If you could own one piece of art by someone else, what would it be?

One of Richard Serra’s sculptures . . . not only for the usual reasons of the beautiful simplicity of their monumental forms, but because I would love a home with a garden large enough to take one!

What is your dream commission?

A monumental sculpture in a permanent public space, which my family could see and be proud of and that would be good enough to warrant still being there long after I’ve returned to star dust.

Where would you like to be this time next year?

Walking on any beach along the beautiful Norfolk coastline close to where I live, or discussing any of life’s unimportant issues with friends in one of Norwich’s 150-plus amazing local pubs.
