Joy de Rohan Chabot . . . Studio Visit

What does your studio look like today?

As usual, there’s a huge accumulation of works in progress on the floor. I like to see things from above, so I can understand how to take the next step to build them. The weather does not affect the way I work. I can work in fifteen degrees or twenty-eight, but I would prefer fifteen.

What are you most excited by right now?

The latest commission is always the most exciting. I refuse to do anything that doesn’t excite me. I would take no pleasure in creating it, and the result would be a disaster.

What is your must-have when working?

Silence.

What would we find in your studio that is unexpected?

Sometimes I have visits from a little dormouse, who loves to eat chocolate with hazelnuts.

What might people not know about your work?

People know what they see in my previous work, but they can never guess what I will make next, because I don’t even know myself.

What do you do to make yourself feel better when things don’t go according to plan?

I stop working and go for a long walk in the forest.

What is your dream commission?

I don’t dare to tell you! If you talk about dreams, they vanish.

Where would you like to be this time next year?

Exactly where I am now, in my studio in the countryside in Auvergne.
