What does your studio look like today?
It’s a typically sunny Californian day with the most beautiful, rich light imaginable. Everything looks as though it has the saturation turned up high. The atmosphere is buoyant and positive with lots of new things planned.
What are you most excited by right now?
The North American market’s very positive reaction to my Bubble Chairs series and Tempus time pieces.
What is your must-have when working?
Podcasts by The Nextmen, Hospital Records or MetalHeadz, If I want something more mellow then Elton John’s Rocket Hour on Beats 1 Radio. Biscuits and veggie chips. Green, raspberry or ginger tea depending on mood. Lots of water and my green superfood juices.
What are the first steps you take when starting a new piece of work?
There are no set steps other than what feels most natural. I know when I’m on a roll as the time hits 3am very easily.
What would we find in your studio that is unexpected?
My boxing equipment, as I like to train in the workshop when I need to de-stress and stretch my back from bending over too much. When things don’t go according to plan, I skip on my driveway and pound my punch bag to clear my head and relieve my tension. Everything feels easy after a good work-out.
What do you dream of at night?
A series of geometric puzzles playing over and over in mind, while I subliminally solve details such as junctions of materials and cutting-paths for machines. My brain can be quite hectic if I’m working on complex pieces.
If you could own one piece of art by someone else, what would it be?
A laser piece by Chris Levine.
What is your dream commission?
I think I’ve had two of them already! One of them was building a fully customised motor home for Troy Corser the former Superbike World Champion. The other was building a 3000 sq ft basement called The Bat Cave for a private art collector, in which I installed a series of crazy interior spaces with the highlight being a laser cage around the client’s Aston Martin DB4. My outstanding ambitions are to design a set for the next bad guy in a James Bond film, followed by the interiors, furniture and art for the first Space Hotel.
