Roome London & Marrikur Design Studio

We love this collaboration and celebration of unique skills and master craftsman techniques – a perfect meeting of minds between two brands that aim to push the boundaries in the application of leather marquetry onto furniture. The bespoke personalisation of each piece encourages long-lasting designs to treasure through generations to come.

The leather marquetry collection – an exclusive for the Helen Chislett Gallery – is a result of Roome London’s vision for creatively combining cabinetry with luxurious materials and Marrikur Design Studio’s expertise in leather marquetry and leather relief.

Sisters Laura and Caroline Allnatt, founders of Roome London, are driven by an exciting vision for imaginative furniture design. After working for twenty years in the fashion and art worlds respectively, they decided to pool their experience, knowledge and passion to create a unique design concept. Exquisite prints created by world-renowned fashion designers and artists are translated into panels of sumptuous, couture fabrics and then applied to furniture shapes that lend themselves to showcasing these artworks to extraordinary effect. Now they have teamed up with Marrikur Design Studio to present a limited-edition collection of cabinetry that features hand-painted artworks translated onto leather marquetry.

Natalie Thakur, co-founder of Marrikur Design Studio, has over 15 years’ experience working in the leather sector and is a previous winner of the Leatherworker of the Year Award awarded by Heritage Crafts, an organisation which celebrate traditional living crafts made in the UK – its President is HM King Charles III. She founded Marrikur with fine artist, Neale Marriott, offering the best of traditional craft alongside the application of contemporary art.

Every piece of furniture is made by hand in the UK and follows sustainable practises. The leather is vegetable-tanned and sourced in Italy through the Genuine Italian Vegetable Tanned Leather Consortium. It is a byproduct of the EU meat industry, meaning no animal is reared for its hide and the leathers comply with EU legislation on animal welfare. The Consortium guarantees manufacturing processes compatible with social responsibility and sustainability. The leather is tanned using natural plant-based tannins and adheres to strictly controlled guidelines ensuring the implementation of responsible environmental strategies. Tencel silk is produced in a closed-loop process that recycles the elements involved at a recovery rate of more than ninety-percent.

Laura Allnatt says:
Putting quality first is a genuine feature of the studio. At Roome London, we use the best materials and master craftsmen to deliver luxurious statement furniture pieces across the globe.

Natalie Thakur says:
It all starts with art, translated through playful experimentation into original and functional art objects with a modern aesthetic and heritage craft skills.”
